What creatine actually does
Creatine is a compound stored in muscle cells that helps regenerate ATP — the primary energy currency of short-burst, high-effort muscle contractions. Higher creatine stores in muscle cells mean more capacity for strength output during exercise, which means a stronger training stimulus, which means a stronger lean mass preservation signal.
It also increases intramuscular water content, which contributes to the volumizing effect (muscles appear slightly larger and fuller with adequate creatine saturation). This is not water weight in the pejorative sense — it's functional muscle hydration that supports contractile performance.
Why it matters specifically on GLP-1
Dietary creatine comes almost entirely from meat and fish — approximately 1–2g per day on a typical omnivore diet. On GLP-1 therapy with significantly reduced food intake, dietary creatine drops proportionally. Combined with reduced physical activity in some users during weight loss, muscle creatine stores can decline.
The lean mass preservation argument for creatine on GLP-1 is the same as in any caloric deficit: maintaining creatine saturation preserves the ability to exercise with adequate intensity, which preserves the signal for muscle retention.
