Leucine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and the most important amino acid for muscle protein synthesis signaling. Unlike other amino acids that serve primarily as building blocks, leucine functions as a direct activator of mTOR — the cellular master switch that tells muscle cells to build and maintain protein. No other amino acid has this specific signaling role.
Leucine is an essential amino acid: the body cannot synthesize it. It must come from dietary protein or supplementation.
