What it is

Ginger root extract (Zingiber officinale) is a concentrated, standardized form of ginger that isolates its active compounds — primarily gingerols and shogaols. Standardization to 5% gingerols ensures a consistent, measurable dose of the compounds responsible for ginger's clinical effects, rather than the variable potency of raw ginger powder.

Why it's in Anchor

GLP-1 receptor agonists slow gastric emptying as part of their mechanism — which is why they reduce appetite, but also why nausea is the most commonly reported side effect. Gingerols interact with 5-HT3 serotonin receptors in the GI tract, the same receptors targeted by pharmaceutical anti-nausea medications. They also support healthy gastric motility, helping food move through the digestive system at a more comfortable rate.

Clinical trials in chemotherapy-induced nausea and pregnancy-related nausea — two models often applied to peptide therapy — consistently show benefit at 500mg of standardized extract. Non-standardized forms introduce too much variability to replicate those results reliably.

When a clinical trial found that 500mg of ginger root extract standardized to 5% gingerols reduced nausea in a controlled population, that's the dose we use. Every ingredient in Anchor has the same standard.

The dose and why

500mg standardized to 5% gingerols is the dose appearing most consistently in positive clinical outcomes across multiple nausea models. Lower doses (under 250mg) show weaker and less consistent effects. Higher doses don't meaningfully increase benefit. The standardization to 5% gingerols is the difference between a measured dose of active compound and a variable dose of plant matter.

What product it's in

Ginger Root Extract is one of three ingredients in GI Relief — Anchor's formula built specifically for the GI side effects of peptide therapy. It works alongside Peppermint Leaf and Soluble Fiber to address nausea, bloating, and motility from three different angles.
